THE CHALLENGE

It is widely recognised that plastics have a crucial role to play in delivering a more sustainable future. Through their unique combination of light weight, durability and barrier properties, plastics are the ideal option to safely package food to feed a growing world population. However, challenges relating to littering and end-of-life options for certain types of plastic packaging must be addressed if the material is to achieve its fullest potential in a circular and resource efficient economy.

Today, over 90% of plastic packaging globally is currently not recycled and there is a strong drive for change as consumers and governments alike demand action to tackle the growing waste problem.

Until now, there have been no financially viable solutions that can provide recycled feedstock on the mass scale this requires.  In developed economies, the infrastructure struggles to meet the ambitions of society and in transitional nations, limited plastics recycling is available.

Factory

To combat surging plastic pollution, consumer goods companies are rethinking packaging design in line with the waste hierarchy:

  • REDUCE

  • REUSE

  • RECYCLE

Today, brands are seeking to:

Reduce the overall amount of plastic used in packaging

Recycling dustbin

Increase how much packaging is recycled post use, thereby reducing how much goes to landfill or incineration

increase the use of recycled plastic in packaging

These commitments are pushing up global demand for trustworthy recycled raw materials and the prospect of fraud is very real.

At Greenback, we recognise the need for better recycling technology and a certification program that can guarantee the provenance of recycled plastics to improve transparency throughout global supply chains.
